Description
The Circuit of Norcia Museum comprises the fortress called La Castellina in Piazza San Benedetto, which also houses the Diocesan Museum, the Collection Massenzi and the Archaeological Exhibition "Leaving for the afterlife", also home to the important Porta Ascolana where you can visit the ancient Roman Cryptoporticus.
Castellina
The building, designed by Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, stands in the main square of Norcia. Its construction was commissioned by Pope Julius III, was built for defensive purposes mainly between 1554 and 1630. It looks like a fortress, compact and low, with four corner bastions, provided with slits for the shot. All the inside, an elegant courtyard onto which a portico with arches on pillars on the ground floor and a porch with pillars and wooden lintel on the first floor. Today, in addition to various temporary exhibitions, hosts the Civic and Diocesan Museum, the Collection Massenzi and Permanent Archaeological Exhibition "Leaving for the Hereafter".
Civic and Diocesan Museum
The museum brings together works of art from local (vestments, frescoes, paintings on canvas or board, polychrome wooden or stone, glazed terracotta) of ecclesiastical and municipal property, dating from the XII and XVIII century.
Collection Massenzi
The archaeological collection , one of the largest private collections of Umbria, Norcia is reached thanks to the generosity of its donors, the Knight Evelino Massenzi. It consists of significant Etruscan and Greek dating from the first century and VIII B.C.
Permanent Archaeological exhibit "Leaving for l`afterlife"
The exhibition makes available to the public part of the recent discoveries of Hellenistic necropolis of Nursia: from the town of Colle dell`Annunziata, Popoli, Plan of Santa Scolatica (necropolis of the dairy) come valuable tombs dating from the end of IV and I sec. B.C.
Cryptoporticus Roman Porta Ascolana
Findings from the IX to the III century B.C. testify to the presence of a village in Norcia and Sabine necropolis; Latin epigraphs and a cryptoporticus, open to the inside of the exhibition, documenting the town hall of the Roman period.
